    Carved Calligraphy

    Materials:

    1/2" flat lettering brush
    black acrylic paint
    water
    small bottle for mixing
    14" x 16" piece of Bristol board
    soft pencil
    ruler
    foam plate for paint palette

    Steps:

    1. Draw two sets of horizontal guidelines, 2-1/2 inches apart, on the Bristol board (figure A). Draw light vertical lines as guides.

    2. Mix half water and half acrylic paint in a small bottle and shake vigorously. Pour a small amount onto palette.

    3. Fully load the 1/2-inch flat brush with paint on both sides.

    4. Letter any desired message on the board, utilizing calligraphy techniques. (Ken demonstrated Peace and Love.)

    Carving

    Materials:

    calligraphy message (from instructions above)
    ballpoint pen
    ruler
    9" x 12" sheet of transfer paper
    Dremel or other rotary tool w/large round carbide cutting bit
    safety glasses
    16" round sealed basswood platter
    wood stain (optional)

    Steps:

    1. Place transfer paper over the center of the wood platter. Place tracing paper with lettering over the transfer paper (figure B).

    2. Outline lettering with ballpoint pen to transfer calligraphy onto the wood (figure C).

    3. Remove papers and fill in any skipped lines with pencil.

    4. Remove wood from inside the letters with the rotary tool (figure D).

    5. Stain if you wish to give letters desired color (figure E).

    6. As an alternate, remove the background, leaving the letters untouched. Then stain the background, leaving the letters natural (figure F).
